Choose your own documentary

Choose your own documentary is a low-tech one man show somewhere between stand up and TV documentary, directed and performed by Nathan Penlington and created with a team of documentary film-makers including Fernando Gutierrez De Jesus, Nick Watson and Sam Smaïl. Obsessed by the Choose your own adventure book series of the 80s, Nathan purchased a whole bunch on e-bay and by accident found pages of a diary and notes written by a boy back then, who would now be his own age. Similarities between the two men and their childhood begin to reveal themselves,
and the audience, who has been handed a remote to vote, is trusted to choose each step Nathan takes to find this man and return the diary. There are over 1500 possibilities how this show could unfold each night including the option to end the show 'quickly and sadly'. This is theatre at its best, gradually drawing in the audience while the focus subtly shifts to the daily ethical choices we make without maybe even noticing. For example is it ok to return a diary to a man who sold all his childhood belongings to 'get rid of his past'? Its fascinating to see how the fellow audience members prioritize more reasonable (google  search) or more adventurous (ask a psychic) options to progress towards a happy ending.
