Substance

A few days ago I saw one of the most inspiring performances entitled "Sand table". This is a close  collaboration between choreographer Meg Stuart and visual artist Megali Desbazeille, who seem to share a fascination with the image of the body and the nature of materials. Performed at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, the space was rearranged so that a small audience could watch the piece from a bird's eye view. Images of dancers casually lying and moving on a wooden floor are projected on a glass table covered in sand. Two live dancers interact with the previously recorded film. With each gesture they shift the sand and distort and sometimes erase the projected images. The flat images suddenly appear fuller and briefly gain new life and meaning. Dealing with intimacy and sexuality in a casual way the piece is disturbing and beautiful at the same time.
